The Systemwide Generative AI Committee

Generative artificial intelligence was organized to be a broad-reaching disruptive force in higher education, with implications to all facets of the organization. Co-sponsored by Academic Affairs and Information Technology Services in the Chancellor’s Office, this cross-functional committee was convened for a limited time to develop guidelines and policy recommendations for the CSU on generative AI with a focus on teaching, learning, & scholarship; applications for enhanced productivity; information technology, security, and privacy; procurement and AI-enabled features in enterprise systems; and implications for copyright and intellectual property. 

Objectives and Responsibilities

The purpose of this committee was to:

  • Develop agile and risk- and opportunity-based guidelines and policy recommendations for applications of generative AI
  • Identify key existing policies that may need to be amended to account for generative AI
  • Identify potential near-term and long-term opportunities for applications of AI
  • Advise on how to communicate and educate on the findings of the committee 

The committee membership included faculty, students, and staff from throughout the CSU

Three Subcommittees focused on: 

  • Teaching, Learning, & Scholarship
  • Privacy, Security, & Procurement
  • Applications for Enhanced Productivity
