The ASCSU is the official voice of the nearly 30,000 faculty in the California State University system. Beth Steffel has been an Associate Professor of Design at CSUSB since 2007 and is the first CSUSB faculty member to be chair of the ASCSU. In 2023, the Cal State Student Association (CSSA) chose Professor Steffel to receive the "Faculty Excellence of the Year" award, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member by the nearly half a million students of the CSU, and the first time they had given it to the Chair of the Academic Senate for the CSU. Professor Steffel also served on the inaugural CSU Systemwide Generative AI Committee and represented the CSU at the Joint California Summit on Generative AI in 2024.
